What gene has been studied for its influence on physical fitness?

ANSWER: Several studies have indicated that variations in the gene for angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE, which codes for a protein that affects blood pressure) can affect speed and endurance. Top-level athletes who carry two copies of the I variant appear to be better at sprinting; those who carry two copies of the D variant seem to be endurance runners.
